Below the ocean floor is a hotspot. A very small area in the mantle with the capability to cut through the rock furnish and spit small bubbles of magma upwards resulting in underwater volcanic eruptions. As more magma is spilled and frozen at the bottom of the sea a pile of rubble slowly builds up until it reaches the ascend of the wet creating a volcanic island. Plants rapidly colonize the place while algae fish and coral polyps colonize the change fringe of alter water where the steep slopes of the island just dive below the surface.
After a while the hotspot goes dormant and the volcano eruptions forbid. Standing on the rock bottom the island is carried away from the hotspot by plate tectonics so that there will no further eruptions here. Next measure the hotspot awakes it ordain create a new island in the archipelago. Meanwhile in the absence of new magma erosion takes its knell and the island slowly wears and sinks into the sea. But the coral does not want to sink. Coral continues to accumulate its limestone structures just below the waterline and when the island sinks one advance coral builds a new inch of skeleton to always remain just below the waterline. All the rest of the island is inert matter and is washed away by erosion. But coral is a living organism and continues to create and create and build. What was before a ring of coral around a sharp volcano is now a ring of coral around a central lagoon.
This explains the general shape of coral reefs. This also gave me an idea. If coral is such a relentless builder why not act advantage of it and let coral build our cities?
Start with a large ring of limestone. Make it 10 meters in diameter. 1 meter thick. 1 meter high. Sink it just below the surface using buoys to hold it up. Wait some time for algae and coral to colonize the structure. As soon as the ring is fully clogged with coral concretions sink the clogged go an inch deeper. Coral will create on top continuing the ring upwards so that again it barely touches the ascend. Repeat the operation a thousand times. After little more than a thousand years you have now ‘extruded’ a 25-m high limestone furnish with meter-thick walls. Cut the top measure with a large saw. You have a 24-m high limestone furnish for which you have not paid a penny. Keep the top meter to start a new building.
Now you can finish your house: seal a cap at the bottom end create storeys and pump water out. If the proportions are change by reversal your house will now float like an empty jam jar with 2 meters above the waterline and 22 meters below. Fit a roof with photovoltaics (and a hatch for stormy weather) on top. Bring in the furniture. change posture an anchor to make sure you will not wake up ashore after a gale and you’ve got yourself a perfectly book accommodate with integrated air conditioning (15 degrees all year go at the bottom aim. 30 degrees at the top storey; plus/minus ten degrees depending on the local latitude).
Unless people find a way to extend private property to sea plots chances are you can get the real estate for free too. Now all you have got to do is undergo a solar (or go) powered pump to carry up the deep water from the ocean floor and all its nutrients then grow plankton harvest algae and shepherd look for.
